Shepherds Defense Group LLC began with a simple desire: to become more proficient in shooting and self-defense so I could better protect my family. Along the way, I was blessed to learn from experienced shooters, instructors, and friends who invested their time and knowledge in me.
Today, I have the privilege of passing that knowledge on by providing everyday people with the practical, quality training I was searching for many years ago. I believe the ability to protect ourselves and those entrusted to our care comes with a responsibility—to train with purpose, exercise good judgment, and continually strive to become more capable and prepared.
My faith is at the foundation of that responsibility. I believe the skills and opportunities God has given me are meant to be used in service to others. Through Shepherds Defense Group, my goal is not simply to teach people how to shoot, but to help them develop the skills, confidence, mindset, and character needed to responsibly protect what matters most.

5 years of law enforcement experience
Contractor with Vortex Edge’s Law Enforcement Division, instructing handgun and carbine

Emily Parkes

Focused, approachable, and driven, Emily has a genuine passion for people. Building strong relationships, helping others, and making a meaningful difference in her community are at the heart of what she does.
As a certified Instructor with Shepherds Defense Group, Emily combines her experience as a competitive shooter with a passion for helping others grow in confidence, knowledge, and preparedness. She also leads SDG’s community outreach and partnership development, building relationships with churches, businesses, and organizations throughout the community.
Her faith is at the foundation of how she approaches both training and service. Emily believes that serving others, protecting those entrusted to us, and using our God-given abilities to make a difference are responsibilities worth taking seriously. For her, Shepherds Defense is about more than learning a skill—it is an opportunity to serve others with faith, integrity, compassion, and purpose.

After a career in Connecticut law enforcement, John continues to bring his experience, knowledge, and steady perspective to those around him. As a competitive shooter, he understands the importance of continued training, discipline, and responsible firearm ownership.
As part of Shepherds Defense Group, John brings not only years of real-world experience but also a servant-minded approach to helping others become more capable, confident, and prepared to protect what matters most.
